Journey Three / Chapter 34

Nikko

April 2019

Exploring the wondrous Nikko, an ancient forest-town that is full of tranquil buddhist temples, majestic tombs of Japan's past and pristine hot bath onsens.

Nikko is a peaceful respite, and as such, it is one of most iconic places to visit in the North Kanto region. Nikko is well-known for its natural beauty, from verdant forests, rolling hills and breathtaking waterfalls to raging rivers, streams and a beautiful lake.

And hidden among this natural beauty is the town of Nikko, an old centre of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship. As a result, many important temples and shrines are located there. It is also the preferred resting place of several shoguns from Japan's past and therefore hosts their opulent mausoleums.
